“The Miracle Worker” will be County Players 220th production! We are proud of accomplishing this feat in a little over 55 years. Putting on 4 shows a year (since 1980) is a lot of work as well as a lot of fun. Generally, in the summer, we begin rehearsals for the fall production of the new season. Occasionally, we get inspired to add an extra fundraiser. This helps keep the coffers full as well as providing a venue for performers and entertainment for our audiences. Of our 220 shows, 20 have been fundraisers.
Fundraisers can take many forms. Technically, our first show in 1958, “Bell, Book, and Candle”, was a fundraiser. It helped us prepare for our first opening season. This was directed by Pete Edman, a founder and Lifetime Member who still serves on our Board! Several other productions were also full length plays – including “The Mikado”, “The Glass Menagerie”, “A Delicate Balance”, and “They’re Playing Our Song”. Our only winter fundraiser was the popular holiday play Christmas Carol” in 1982.
The summertime has also served as an opportunity to do one-act productions. This gives us a chance to highlight lesser known plays by notable playwrights like Tennessee Williams and Woody Allen.
The popular High School Drama Awards program, which County Players sponsored for 26 years (1963-1989), provided our company with a lot of fresh young talent. In the early eighties, many of these teenagers created their own group called Young Players. They produced three summer musicals to include “Barnum”, “Man of La Mancha”, and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. In 1984, an off-shoot of this group of high school thespians created “Limelight” under the direction of Mimi Friedenberg, daughter of lifetime member Rachel Cassidy.
However, perhaps the most popular summer venues have been our 12 musical revues. Veteran Musical Director Tom Lawrence has created four of these – “Movies, Musicals, & More”, A Musical Revue”, “Jacque Brel”, and “County Players – In Concert”. Glenn Casale’s “Ten Years Ten” in 1980 was an original revue based on the Broadway hits of the ‘70’s. Glenn directed three plays for CP prior to his move to LA where he became a prominent professional Director. Notably, he brought the critically acclaimed “Peter Pan” to Broadway with Cathy Rigby. Director Anna Marie Paolercio’s “World Goes ‘round” in 2006 proved to be a spectacular song and dance revue of Kander and Ebb music. In the Summer of 2014, we’ll bring the Big Band sound together, combined with County Players singers, for Broadway: Big Band Style. Hope to see you there for this fabulous musical evening!
Over the years, hundreds of locally talented actors and singers have graced our stage in the summer. Some have gone on to bigger and better things, but most of them came back to audition again and again. Summer fundraisers have proven to be a big part of our success. We hope you agree. Come out and enjoy our next summertime venue!

Improved Bathrooms Highlight Renovations
Last summer, County Players completed some renovation work inside our theater building. Structural work around the back wall of the theater improved the structural integrity of our nearly 100 year old building. At the same time, the bathrooms were completely replaced, resulting in more capacity as well as improved accessibility.
At the 2011 Spirit of Dutchess County Awards luncheon last week the County Players team was honored for their work as volunteers with a $1,000 grant. They were among the 24 outstanding individuals, two youths and four groups of volunteers saluted by United Way of Dutchess County and Hands On! The Hudson Valley at the event held at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.
