Dialect Workshop for Actors
November 4, 2023
A good dialect can make or break a performance. Learning a believable dialect can be daunting. Knowing what to listen for, how to break it down, and how to practice, and then turning it into something that will convince an audience is not easy to do—at least without a little guidance.
The goal of this workshop is to teach actors how to make a dialect work. When a dialect is accurate and specific, it can unlock impulses and illuminate qualities in a character. Confidence with dialects is a secret weapon for an actor.
What: This full day workshop will be divided into two sections:
- Morning: We will sort out how to learn a new dialect. You’ll get the tools, including the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), to learn new dialects. We’ll break down the steps of taking an accent from “I can’t do an Irish accent” to “I can totally do an Irish accent” so that the next time you’ll have a technique to get you there.
- Afternoon: We will work on the dialects you will most frequently encounter in auditions, and which you ought to be able to pull out of your back pocket (i.e., British, Irish, and American Southern).
Who: The workshop will be taught by Brittany Proia, a Hudson Valley based actor, producer, director, and educator. Brittany holds an MFA in Acting from the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, a Bachelor of Music from New York University’s Steinhardt School. Currently, she teaches acting and voice courses at the State University of New York at New Paltz and serves as Managing Director of Shadowland Stages.
