Character Breakdown:
Please note: Those cast may be asked to get a military style haircut.
Pfc. William T. Santiago (Soldier, Male, Latino): About 19 years old, sincere & sensible. Santiago appears in flashbacks and to narrate his letters throughout the play. [content warning to interested actors: scenes from this character’s death are reenacted. Will be working with a fight choreographer for stage combat scenes.]
Lance Cpl. Harold Dawson (Soldier, Male): About 20 years old: stoic, serious, bold, aware, intimidating even in silence, caring in command. Dawson is slightly faster on his feet than Downey, and tends to make decisions for both of them. Dawson has the utmost respect for military protocol and honor. [content warning to interested actors: this character physically assaults Santiago, and gets punched by Kaffee. Will be working with a fight choreographer for stage combat scenes.]
Pfc. Louden Downey (Soldier, Male): About 19 years old. Downey is young, impressionable, obedient and respectful. He follows orders unquestioningly but becomes conflicted as the trial progresses. He believes completely in the military ideals of honor and integrity. [content warning to interested actors: this character physically assaults Santiago. Will be working with a fight choreographer for stage combat scenes.]
Lt. J.G. Daniel Kaffee (Lead Defense Attorney, Male): Late 20s – Early 30s. Easy-going and quick-witted. He is good-looking, talented, and smart; and he knows it. He tends to think that he knows everything. Kaffee’s tactic is to charm and haggle his way toward the quickest, easiest solution. He doesn’t want to work hard, nor does he want to test himself. Justice, or any sense that the cases he works have any moral implication, isn’t a concern for Kaffee. The son of a famous lawyer, Kaffee is afraid to try his best and not measure up. To escape this, he simply doesn’t try. [content warning to interested actors: this character punches Dawson. Will be working with a fight choreographer for stage combat scenes.]
Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway (Defense Attorney, Female): 30s. A dedicated and idealistic Navy lawyer who is passionate about seeking justice, all-business. ALMOST as fully composed as she would like to be but, usually, more composed than others tend to think she is. Her quick wit tends to take others by surprise. She’s bright, impulsive, and has a tendency to speak quickly. She’s worked hard to come as far as she has and always use my heart, passion, and experience to pursue her goals. However, she sometimes gets into trouble for saying exactly what she thinks but her instincts are worth far more than anyone around her gives her credit for.
Lt. J.G. Sam Weinberg (Defense Attorney, Male): Late 20s – Early 30s. Weinberg provides comic relief with his witty remarks and sarcastic comments. Despite his laid-back demeanor, he is a skilled lawyer who assists Kaffee in the defense. He does his job with reasonable diligence, but he is a family man first and foremost.
Capt. Isaac Whitaker (JAG supervisor, Male): Mid 40s to early 50s. Smart and sensible, not strict. The man in charge of the JAG Corps (military law division) in Washington, D.C. He allows Galloway to work on the case even though Kaffee was the only lawyer officially assigned to it.
Capt. Matthew Markinson (GITMO Company Commander, Male): Late 40s to early 50s. Stoic, logical, and strictly military. Served in Counter-Intelligence for 17 years. A key witness in the trial, Markinson is a high-ranking officer who becomes embroiled in the controversy surrounding the case. He has a strong sense of morality and struggles with his conscience and ultimately plays a crucial role in uncovering the truth.
Lt. Col. Nathan Jessep (GITMO CO, Male): Late 30s to early 40s. Self-confident to-a-fault. Bold, Intelligent, Ultra-Military, Tyrannical. He is a stern and authoritative figure known for his uncompromising principles and rigid adherence to the Marine Corps code – He has the utmost faith in his own authority as a Marine, and in the sanctity of the Marine Corps. Jessep does not tolerate any questioning of his orders or authority and responds to such with barely restrained rage. Any perceived disrespect or insufficient respect, which basically means anyone who dares to act like he’s not an absolute authority, brings out Jessep’s nasty side.
Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick (GITMO Winward XO, Male): Late 20s to early 30s. A loyal and disciplined Marine office – by-the-books man. Stoic, fanatically religious, but believes himself to be much smarter than he is.
Capt. Jack Ross (Prosecutor, Male): Early 30s. A nice guy but not a sucker. Charismatic, pragmatic, logical and sensible. He is intelligent and strategic, using every legal tactic at his disposal.
Cpl. Jeffrey Howard (Soldier, Male): Early 20s. Probably likable to fellow Marines, but snide to those outside the Corps. Leader of Charlie squad in Guantanamo Bay.
Capt. Julius Alexander Randolph (Judge): Mid 40s to early 50s. Smart, sensible, fair. Is fair and impartial, ensuring that the proceedings adhere to legal standards while navigating the Complexities of military law.
Cmdr. Walter Stone (Doctor): Mid-late 40s. Sensible but easily swayed.
CPL Dunn – (Soldier, Male) Leader of Alpha Squad in Guantanamo Bay.
CPL Hammaker – (Soldier, Male) Leader of Bravo squad in Guantanamo Bay.
Tom – (Soldier, Male) Assistant to Col. Jessep.
ADDITIONAL ROLES: Some actors will be asked to play multiple roles, Sentry, Lawyers, Marines, MPs, and etc. These roles are integral to setting the pace of the show and rounding out the ensemble.
