Please prepare a 2-minute monologue for the audition. The audition will also include readings from the script.
VIOLENCE, INTIMACY, & SPECIAL NOTES
- The characters of Margot, Maxine and Tony will have moments of Intimacy which will be choreographed collaboratively with the actors, Director and Intimacy Coordinator.
- Moments of Stage Violence will be choreographed collaboratively with the actors, Fight Choreographer and Director. Characters involved in staged violence include: Lesgate & Margo. Lesgate simulates strangling Margo, Margo simulates stabbing Lesgate with a pair of scissors. This scene may also include a short scuffle for control of persons and items.
- There will be drinking and smoking in this production.
- English accents required for all characters but MAXINE.
Character breakdown
Margot Wendice – She/Her. 30s/40s, English
Margot is a wealthy, charming, and pretty socialite, married to Tony Wendice. Her unfulfilling marriage to Tony led to her brief affair with Maxine. Warm, elegant, and sincere but she tends toward caution and convention. Balances vulnerability with inner strength. She is deeply in the closet, and her greatest fear is being found out.
Maxine Hadley – She/Her. 30s/40s, American
Maxine is a crime novelist with an incredible mind for murder plots. She’s a client of Tony’s. Although she longs to rekindle her prior relationship with Margot she attempts to abide by Margot’s boundaries and confine herself to the role of a platonic friend. Determined, persistent, passionate, suspicious. She has a bold and daring personality and is not afraid to spurn conventional roles and expectations. She is thoughtful, loyal, and determined to protect Margot.
Tony Wendice – He/Him. 30s/40s, English
Tony is a failed novelist now reduced to toiling away as a publicity agent for a publishing company and is working with Maxine on her latest novel. Financially dependent on Margot. His greatest talent is improvisation, his greatest weapon is his charm, and his greatest love is money. He is handsome and very sure of himself – A deviously brilliant chameleon.
Lesgate – He/him. 30s/40s, English
Lesgate was a fellow student with Tony at Cambridge. A smooth, slightly worn-down opportunist with a long history of criminal activity who gets pulled into Tony’s scheme. Has spent his life scrambling to belong with the upper class, and isn’t above lying, cheating or stealing to get there. Charming, tense, morally flexible and not nearly as smart as he thinks he is.
Inspector Hubbard – He/him. 40s/50s. English
Inspector Hubbard is a clever, steady Scotland Yard detective with a calm presence and a sharp eye for detail. A man of his time. He is devoted to the facts and truth above all, though he does sometimes let his own biases cloud his judgment. Thoughtful and thorough with the physical presence of a police inspector.
