A fable about the limits of language in matters of the heart.

Will a man who speaks nine languages ever learn to communicate with his wife? Will the last two speakers of a soon-to-be dead language break their vow of silence? The lives of five people are imaginatively woven together as they discover that no matter how many words they can speak, it’s the heart’s language that matters most.

SYNOPSIS:

George is a man consumed with preserving and documenting the dying languages of far-flung cultures. Closer to home, though, language is failing him. He doesn’t know what to say to his wife Mary to keep her from leaving him, and he doesn’t recognize the deep feelings that his lab assistant Emma has for him.

PLACE: Locations include the home of George and Mary; George’s laboratory; a train station; a hospital room; and a bakery.

TIME: Present Day

There will be one 15-minute intermission

PRODUCTION HISTORY:

THE LANGUAGE ARCHIVE was commissioned and originally produced by Roundabout Theatre Company, New York, NY, Todd Haimes, Artistic Director. It received its world premiere at South Coast Repertory, produced by special arrangement with Roundabout Theatre Company. Its development was supported by the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center during a residency at the National Playwrights Conference 2009.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE:

I have something in common with playwright Julia Cho, and the character of George in this play, in that I never learned my grandmother’s language. My mother was born in Cardiff, Wales, speaking only Welsh at home and only English in the British-run school, where a child would be punished if they were caught speaking Welsh. My sister and I were raised in the US, speaking English, with only a smattering of Welsh via my mother. But I did not carry much Welsh with me when I became a mother, which I regret. Julia Cho never learned Korean as she grew up, and George’s speech in this play about not having learned his grandmother’s language is Cho speaking of this same regret. I did learn Spanish in high school and college. My daughter-in-law is Colombian and I am so grateful that I was able speak to her before she learned English, and that my granddaughter is growing up bilingual. Her mother will make sure that she does NOT lose her “mother tongue.” Nor will she let Ella lose her appreciation of her mother’s home country, language, and traditions. When we learn a language, or lose a language, we are also gaining or losing something of the culture of the speakers. Happily, Ella will become the living archive for her mother’s language and heritage.

Rich Hack (George)

is delighted to be back. This marks his fourth production at County Players, having previously appeared in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Hero), Rabbit Hole (Howie Corbett), and Born Yesterday (Harry Brock). Other favorite productions over the years include Of Mice and Men (Rhinebeck Theatre Society), Assassins (CENTERstage Productions), Into the Woods (CENTERstage Productions), Death of a Salesman (CENTERstage Productions), and Honk! (Rhinebeck Theatre Society). While performances are the destination, it’s the journey that means the most to him—the discovery, creation, collaboration, and lasting friendships forged throughout the process. He sends deep gratitude to not only Kit and this cast and crew, but to everyone who he has shared the stage with over the years, especially Jenn, Kevin, Lou, and Michael, whose memories continue to inspire, and heartfelt thanks to Christine for helping him find his way back to the stage.

Stephanie Hepburn (Alta)

performed with County Players in Our Town, The Drowsy Chaperone, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Admissions, and A New Century. Elsewhere: Follies, The Importance of Being Earnest, and A Watched Pot (Depot Theatre); Equus and Lend Me A Tenor (TroupEnigma); Scotland Road Bannerman Island); two national tours of Fiddler. She won Best Actress in the Depot One Acts for a 10min monologue, Slow Dating. Trivia: she was Brenda Vaccaro’s body double in Al Pacino’s You Don’t Know Jack; taught English on Japanese TV at age 14; was in the world premiere of the musical Orphan Train in NYC; originated the role of Helene in 84 Charing Cross Road in Britain; is the voice of Miss Abby in Bully and Widder in Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto IV; taught theatre for over 30 years at various colleges. 60 years of films, TV, stage, and teaching; boy, I’m old!

Janet Nurre (Mary)

Ted Odell (Resten)

is glad to be making his second appearance at County Players, having appeared in 12 Angry Jurors (Juror 11 – foreigner) back in 2009. Ted got the acting bug in college after taking an elective acting course with legendary acting teacher George Morrison at SUNY Purchase. He has appeared in well over 80 productions in the Tri-State area over the past 40 years. Most recently he appeared in The Book of Will (Elmwood Playhouse), Man of La Mancha (Creative Theatre Muddy Waters), and Romeo and Juliet (Cornerstone Playhouse). Favorite roles include John Barrymore in I Hate Hamlet, Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, and Caldwell B. Cladwell in Urinetown. Thank you to my son, William, and daughter, Madyson, for their love and support.

Bill Peckham (Old Man - Zamenhof)

is proud of his history with CP since 1978 as a director, set designer, board member, and actor. He finally became eligible to play “Old Men” without makeup! More recently, he directed and designed sets for On Golden Pond, Miracle on South Division Street, Of Mice and Men, Doubt, and All My Sons. He has appeared in numerous productions and involved with most all of the theatre companies in the Hudson Valley. What a great life! Thanks to Kit and crew for their help, and the sweet memory of Jayne.

Vincent Peter (Passerby 1)

is excited to be a part of another County Players’ production. His last time on-stage was in A Few Good Men. He has worked backstage dressing actors in Into the Breaches!; Big Fish; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; and Vania and Sonia and Masha and Spike. During the day, he teaches Public Speaking at Dutchess Community College/SUNY. He’d like to thank all of his County Players friends for showing up when he needed them during his recent difficult time. He was overwhelmed by their kindness and generosity and support. In particular, he’d like thank Alex for the 19 years. You left us too soon. He misses you every day.

Jenn Propfe (Emma)

is delighted to be playing in this endearing and quirky piece. She previously appeared in the CP2 Reader’s Theater productions of Miss Bennett: Christmas at Pemberley (Jane Bingley), and Silent Sky (Margaret Leavitt), as well as full productions of Lips Together, Teeth Apart (Sally Truman), Young Frankenstein (ensemble), Guys and Dolls (Hot Box Girl Silk), CP In Concert (singer), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (woman 1/nun/maid/ensemble), A County Players Christmas (singer), All American Big Band Style (singer), A Grand Night For Singing (singer), The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (mother/Mrs. Bradley), and Once upon a Mattress (ensemble). When Jenn is not at the theater, she can be found singing with her acoustic duo, She’s My Ex. She would like to thank Becca and Alan for their (reluctant) patience with her ridiculous performance and rehearsal schedules.

Elan Riggs (Passerby 2)

Previous acting credits include Something Rotten! (County Players), and 42nd Street and Godspell (Theatre on Main Street). He’d like to thank his mother and sister for their eternal support, and has enjoyed working hard with the cast and crew to bring you a great show!

Julie Seltzer (Instructor)

is so grateful to be part of this production! She previously appeared on the County Players stage in Babel (Narrator), The Half-Life of Marie Curie (Marie) and The Book of Will (Boy Hamlet/Elizabeth Condell/ Marcus/Marcellus). Other credits include Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at The Brewster Theater Company. is thrilled to return to support this cast. Glen previously stage-managed last season’s final CP2 Readers’ Theatre mini-festival and The Dining Room, and was assistant stage manager on Ms. Holmes and Ms. Watson – Apartment 2B.

Jeanne (Charlebois) Johnson (Assistant Stage Manager)

is happy to be returning to County Players in the ASM role! Her County Players credits include ASM for Ragtime (2024), stage crew for Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B (2024), and in her previous life at CP, stage managing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1990), Crimes of the Heart (1989), and Fifth of July (1989). More recently she has been working front of house as House Manager with some of our wonderful ushers. Jeanne would like to thank Kit and Glen for extending the offer to work with this fantastic cast and crew! She is thrilled to be working backstage again, but working on a show in any capacity is always a good time. Connie E. Boden (Costume Designer)

has been involved in over 20 County Players productions, on- and off-stage since 2018, her favorites being An Ideal husband (Lady Markby) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Gymnasia/Costume Designer). Recent costume design credits include: Something Rotten!, A Few Good Men, Lips Together, Teeth Apart; Into the Breaches!; Perfect Arrangement; Incorruptible; and The Humans with County Players, and Into the Breeches! with the CENTER for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck. Connie earned an M.A. in English Literature from Hofstra University. “Much love to Mike!”

John Leinung (Scenic Designer, Set Décor)

has designed four other sets for County Players: Something Rotten!; Perfect Arrangement; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; and Bullshot Crummond. Retired after more than 40 years as a professional video editor and graphic designer, cameraman, sound man, and producer, he is enjoying dusting-off and reviving his college-acquired theatre training. Dani Masterson (Hair & Makeup Designer)

is an award-winning makeup artist whose artistry has enriched stage, film, and television productions for over four decades. Her portfolio boasts renowned works, including Something Rotten!, A Few Good Men, Ragtime, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, It’s Only a Play, Native Gardens, The Book of Will, Young Frankenstein, Seven Keys to Baldpate, Jesus Christ Superstar, Aida, Spamalot, and Amadeus. Her expertise in wig design and makeup artistry has graced such venues as County Players and Westchester Broadway Theater. Dani’s skills earned her the Best Hair Design Award from the 2019 Broadway World Regional Awards. Dani was also inducted into the prestigious Buglers Hall of Fame, a testament to her diverse talents and passions. Dani serves as a Moulage Specialist, creating hyper-realistic special effects injuries for Homeland Security training exercises.

Peggy Ringwood (Properties)

is excited to work with this talented cast and crew. She has appeared on-stage in many County Players productions, and headed props on many more. As always, she is grateful for her family, the County Players friends she has made, and her “Props Peeps,” especially Nancy. Nancy Scrivner (Properties)

has been a volunteer at County Players for almost 30 years. She has helped backstage, with set décor, costumes, concessions, and ushering. She had no theater background, but got hooked watching live theater here. She wants to thank Charlie for his love and understanding, Grace Padworski and Dilys Clark for getting her started, and everyone else she has met along the way. Love you all.

NO RECORDING: The use of any audio or video recording device, and the taking of photographs, with or without flash, is strictly prohibited. Violators may be punished by ejection and violations may render the offender liable for monetary damages.

FIRE NOTICE: Fire exits are indicated by illuminated signs above the exit doors. In the event of fire or other emergency, please WALK to the nearest exit door.

TURN OFF ELECTRONIC DEVICES: The use of cellular phones, pagers, and other audible or light-emitting electronic devices is an annoyance to your fellow theater-goers and can interfere with our wireless lighting and sound systems. If you are in possession of any of these devices, please ensure they are TURNED OFF, not merely silenced, throughout the performance.

NO SMOKING: County Players At The Falls Theater is a smoke-free building. Smoking is prohibited anywhere on the premises and within 50 feet of any of the entrances.

Guests expecting EMERGENCY MESSAGES should notify the house manager upon their arrival at the theater.

LATECOMERS will be seated at the discretion of the management at the first appropriate interval on a space available basis.

RESTROOMS are located in the back of the theater.

EMERGENCY RESUSCITATION EQUIPMENT (AED) is located behind the refreshment counter in the lobby. County Players is designated a Heartsafe Location by the Dutchess County Commissioner of Health.

PARKING is at your own risk. County Players is not responsible for parking tickets, towing fees, or damage incurred to vehicles of patrons. Please obey all parking signs and regulations.

TICKETS are non-refundable. We do not accept unpaid reservations. Purchases may be made in advance or call the Box Office or online at countyplayers.org using your MasterCard, VISA, or Discover, by mailing a check at least two weeks prior to a performance.
