Set on the beachside deck of a house on Fire Island during the 1990 Fourth of July weekend, McNally’s story imagines a gathering between two mismatched couples. Debate, discussion, and disclosure (including secrets, a mystery, and an affair) follow.

“Two straight couples — sister and brother Chloe and Sam, and their spouses John and Sally, spend the Fourth of July at a beachside home on Fire Island. Sally inherited the house from her late gay brother, and the four spend the holiday surrounded by friendly, partying gay neighbors on either side. The four characters reveal — through quick, funny, heartbreaking dialogue and intensely personal monologues — that they are essentially completely alone with their pain. It’s a grimly funny examination of marriage, hopes and dreams, and of life in the presence of death.”
