This musical tapestry depicts an African-American family, a Jewish immigrant family, and a wealthy white suburban family in turn-of-the-century America, who collide in pursuit of the American Dream. Nominated for 13 Tony Awards® including “Best Musical,” and winning for “Best Original Score” and “Best Book of a Musical,” Ragtime is a powerful portrait of life during the turn-of-the century, exploring America’s timeless contradictions of freedom and prejudice, wealth, and poverty, hope and despair.

A Note about Language

Language is powerful. As Coalhouse himself says, “Your sword can be a sermon or power of the pen.” In the spirit of telling the story of Ragtime truthfully, the playwright elected to imply the use of racial and ethnic epithets to highlight moments of racism and nativism within the story. The creative team has chosen to honor the author’s intent and present the realities of life in our country at the turn of the 20th century. If the language makes you feel uncomfortable, then we have served the author well.
